The Society began in life in 1974 as the Leicester Family History Circle. It quickly
grew and was later renamed the Leicestershire Family History Society. In 1992
Rutland was incorporated into the Society and the name changed to the
Leicestershire & Rutland Family History Society.
The society is run by a group of Trustees who are elected annually by members at
the A.G.M. They serve on the Executive Committee and are required to undertake specific
duties. Any member can apply for nomination to the Executive Committee.
With the present membership of around 2,600 the LRFHS has the capacity of offer a
wide range of services and activities to assist family history historians and researchers.
We have seven groups of the Society which are all run by Sub-Committees who organise
monthly meetings with talks on a wide range of family history subjects. They are
located in Leicester, Loughborough, Hinckley, Market Harborough, Melton Mowbray,
Rutland and the Computer Group who meet bi-monthly.
